Begin at the Beginning

Something that really grabbed me was the mention of  5 moves a person took when applying to a medical residency. Not all of the moves are applicable in the same manner for every genre. What I found most interesting was the Hook.
The Hook may be the most important part of travel writing, especially creative travel writing such as poetry. Not only should the focus be on grabbing the reader's attention, a writer's goal should be to ultimately transport the reader to that particular place. They should see and hear and feel everything the writer does. Poetry has taught me the same lesson; set the scene. Without that, everything can fall apart. What is most interesting is that this particular move generally has the same function across the board without the exception  The function is to grab the readers attention and draw them into your writing. One could argue this is because the beginning is the most important aspect of any writing. If your beginning isn't interesting enough, no one will ever get to the meat of your argument or idea or poetry.
